Mary Conrad’s Family

Time to go to bed, so time to summarize this.

Looking for the parents of Mary Conrad (b Jun 1827 in NY, d 27 Oct 1906 in Knoxville, Tioga, PA), who married Joseph H Ellison (b abt 1820 in New York, d aft 1880 prob in PA).  Mary was the mother of the no longer so elusive Jennie Ellison.

Looked at the census records for Greenwood, Steuben County, New York in 1850, when Joseph H and Mary (Conrad) Ellison were enumerated there.  I found the household of George Conrad (b abt 1799 in NY) and Ann (b abt 1798 in NY).  They had 4 others living with them who were probably all children of theirs:

  • Catherine Conrad (b abt 1829 in NY)
  • Ezra Conrad (b abt 1833 in NY)
  • Edson Conrad (b abt 1838 in NY)
  • Sarah Conrad (b abt 1841 in NY)

Another Conrad family can be found in Greenwood a few doors down from George & Ann at this time: Humphrey Conrad (b 1821 in NY) and Philinda Conrad (b 1826 in NY).  Humphrey was probably a son of George & Ann.  Humphrey and Philinda had Nellie Jane Conrad (1856 – 1922) and Fred Wilbur Conrad (1863 – 1932). Humphrey enlisted in the Civil War as a Private on 4 March 1864 at the age of 43 in Company H, 10th Cavalry Regiment New York and died from wounds Company H, 10th Cavalry Regiment New York on 23 Sep 1864. Philinda died in 1900 and is buried in the Mead family cemetery in Greenwood along with son Fred. Searching on Ancestry, others have identified Philinda/Phylinda as Philinda Mead, daughter of Alvin Mead and Sally Ann Kruzen.

Ezra Conrad also enlisted in the Civil War, but he survived.  He and his wife Rachel had many children, and by 1900 was living in Potter County, PA.  Ancestry info has his wife having been Rachel King, daughter of John and Electra (Stephens) King.
